Train Vs. Tractor Collision Injures Mallard Man

(Mallard)– A Mallard man was injured Tuesday evening when a tractor he was driving collided with a train.

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office says Joel Cornwall of Mallard was driving a tractor pulling two wagons westbound on 510th Street about a quarter of a mile east of 470th Avenue when he collided with a Union Pacific train.

Cornwall was ejected from the cab of the tractor as a result of the impact.

He was taken by ambulance to the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg and was airlifted to Sioux City. There was no immediate word on the nature of his injury or condition.

Damage to the tractor and wagons was estimated at 25-thousand dollars; the train sustained an estimated 10-thousand dollars in damage.

The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Mallard First Responders, Palo Alto County Ambulance, Pocahontas and Rolfe ambulances and the Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office.

The mishap took place around 8:00 p.m.
