(Spirit Lake)– Dickinson County supervisors are having second thoughts about rescinding a flood plain ordinance.
It was implemented during the 1993 flood to get more disaster assistance to victims. But some residents living in the flood plain have requested the county drop the ordinance, saying it’s causing additional expense and red tape when they want to build or remodel. The Board of Supervisors voted several weeks to drop out of the flood plain ordinance pending a formal response from the Federal Emergency Management Agency about some concerns they had. Zoning Administrator David Kolhaase told the supervisors Tuesday he’s received a response from FEMA which, he says, raises even more concern, especially over liability. The FEMA letter has been referred to the County Attorney’s office for further review before any further action is taken.
