(Spirit Lake)– Meeting in special session Tuesday, the Spirit Lake city council voted three-to-two to adopt the budget for the upcoming fiscal year that has a levy that’s considerably higher than what had been proposed earlier.
After an initial review of the proposed budget last month, it was reported the levy would go up roughly an additional 38 cents per thousand dollars valuation over the current fiscal year. Under the budget adopted Tuesday, the increase is considerably more. City Administrator Pete Hegeman says the budget that was proposed initially didn’t include levies for items outside of the general fund budget. He says that includes things such as tort liability, FICA and IPERS and health insurance premiums for city employees.
Council members Barb Ricke and Jerry Harbst voted against the budget at Tuesday’s meeting.
Under the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, the city’s levy will increase from $8.10 currently to $10.58 per thousand dollars valuation.
Tuesday was the deadline for cities to certify their budgets for the upcoming fiscal year.
