(Orange City)– A Spirit Lake man convicted a second time in a Sioux county murder case has been sentenced to 50 years in prison. The sentence against 71-year-old Gregg Winterfeld was handed down after he was found guilty last month of second degree murder in the death of Grant Wilson. Winterfeld had originally been found guilty in April of this year but a judge ordered a new trial prior to sentencing due to a procedural error that occurred during jury selection in the first trial.
Court documents say that in May of 2020 Winterfeld and Wilson got into an argument at a home in Ireton after the two had been drinking. The documents say Winterfeld then unholstered a gun and shot Wilson. Winterfeld said Wilson had a Knife.
Winterfeld will be required to spend at least 35 years in prison before being eligible for parole.
