(Spirit Lake)– The city of Spirit Lake has been awarded a 2,200-dollar grant through Alliant Energy and Trees Forever and their “Branching Out Program”.
More than 64-thousand dollars was awarded to 18 Iowa communities and/or organizations.
The program is designed to encourage energy efficiency, environmental awareness and community involvement.
Since starting back in 1989, the Branching Out program has resulted in more than 1.1 million trees and seedlings being planted in 2,252 projects throughout Iowa by 115,558 volunteers.
Alliant Energy officials say the trees represent a 14,550,629 kilowatt hour savings, enough to power nearly 1,500 homes annually.
