Spill Shuts Down Portion Of Busy Street In Spirit Lake

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A portion of Hill Avenue in Spirit Lake was shut down this (Thursday) morning as the result of a spill of some hydraulic fluid.

Authorities say a crane owned by Christiansen Larsen Construction of Estherville blew a hydraulic line as it was being driven south on Hill Avenue. Fire Chief David Kollasch says the line blew at about 24th Street, but the driver didn’t notice it until he got to 26th street…leaving a trail of the oily substance on the street.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and spread floor-dry on the fluid…containing it before it could get to a storm sewer. City crews came by later and swept it up.

Spirit Lake firefighters were assisted on the scene by the Spirit Lake Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Dickinson County Emergency Management and the city of Spirit Lake Street Department.
