Spencer Officials Reviewing Preliminary Data From Intersection Studies

December 06, 2021 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Preliminary findings have been released by the Iowa Department of Transportation into safety studies conducted at two dangerous intersections in Spencer. City officials requested the studies at the intersections on Highway 71 near McDonalds and Wal-Mart in Spencer, as well as the one on Highway 71 near Menards. Mayor Kevin Robinson says city officials are reviewing the preliminary information from those studies…

“They have made some suggestions about physical changes in traffic flow. There is continued study that needs to occur related to speed zones and what the speeds in those areas should be once the physical changes are done to how the traffic flow works. Then the next layer is what is the appropriate speed related to the change in traffic flow.”

Robinson says they’ll continue to analyze the findings and work with the Iowa Department of Transportation on ways to make the intersections safer.

Those locations have been the site of a number of bad accidents, including a fatality earlier this year that occurred at the intersection near Menards.
