Spencer Council Approves G-O Bond For Fire Station Project

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– The Spencer city council voted unanimously Monday to enter into a loan agreement to finance the expansion of the city’s fire station.

The vote followed a public hearing on a proposal to issue general obligation bonds not to exceed 1.75 million dollars to pay for the project. After hearing no objections, the council voted six-to-nothing to enter into the loan agreement.

The cost estimate for the project is 1.6 million dollars with the city contributing 300-thousand from it’s Fire Reserve Fund.

Actual planning for the expansion started in 1989 when the Fire Department began acquiring property near the current station.

Fire Chief Doug Duncan says they’ll be meeting with architects this week to go over final plans. They hope to have a bidletting this coming spring with a groundbreaking shortly after that.

Plans call for the new station to be dedicated in 2006 to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the 1931 Spencer fire.
