(Spencer)– Motorists on three different highways across Iowa will notice an increased presence in law enforcement officers this Thursday, October 4th.
Vince Kurtz, a Safety Education Officer with the Iowa State Patrol, says the operation is titled “Operation Northern Lights 2007” and will be a multi-agency effort involving the Iowa State Patrol, county sheriff’s departments and police departments along Highways Three, Nine and 18.
Kurtz says they’ll be looking for traffic violations as well as impaired drivers and seatbelt violations. He says the primary goal is to lower traffic fatalities and raise awareness.
This is the second year for Operation Northern Lights. Last year’s operation resulted in seven drunk driving arrests; 228 seatbelt violations and 749 speed violations. 2,057 total traffic violations were observed over the 41-county project area.
