(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake School Board voted unanimously in a special session today (Mon.) to officially put a $69.9 million bond issue on the ballot for the November 3rd election. A petition calling for the election needed at least 150 signatures. According to district officials, it received 371, with at least 227 of those being verified. Superintendent Dr. David Smith says he feels those numbers have something to say about the interest in the facilities improvement proposal…
“It’s a great sign, it’s a good start. It means people are probably in the loop on what’s going on and what’s happening, why it’s happening. So it’s a strong start. You know our job is just to truly go back to the education and just showing people why we’re doing what we’re doing, what the costs are, what the replacements would look like, and just going above and beyond to just try to get everybody all the information they need. There’s going to be people for it and there’s going to be people against it and we’ll see where it ends up.”
Some opposition to the referendum may be surfacing, however. Christine Murphy spoke during today’s (Mon.) meeting requesting the board table the referendum, alleging multiple conflicts of interest…
“It’s just not fair to the public to go forward with a bond when these people are compromised, possibly not legally but the spirit of the law has been broken here. I do not see how you can go forward with this public bond.”
School officials declined comment on the allegations.
