(Spirit Lake)– What stays and what goes. That’s the issue now before the Spirit Lake school board as it looks to trim nearly a million dollars from the upcoming fiscal year’s budget.
The school board took on the arduous task of identifying potential cuts at a workshop Thursday evening. Major items on the chopping block include five teaching positions that would be left vacant through early retirement and attrition.
A K-6 teacher would be reduced as well, along with a media specialist, a nurse, atleast one principal and an assistant principal.
A custodian and six classroom associates could also be lost.
That’s in addition to numerous other smaller reductions being proposed.
The board will review the proposed cuts further and take possible action on them at their regular monthly meeting this coming Monday.
