(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake school board was informed Monday evening that two days of school that were missed because of snow will be made up May 29th and 30th and the day missed on March 6th due to the Girls State Basketball Tournament will be made up May 31st. A half-day of classes also missed due to the tournament has to be made up as well. Administrators are still trying to decide how to do that. Superintendent Tim Grieves told the board one option would be to go a half-day on June 1st. He says they’ll look at Iowa Code to see what options are available to make it up.
A teacher who was at Monday’s meeting suggested an additional 25 minutes per period be tacked on a certain school day. Grieves said he doesn’t think that’s permissible under Code.
The board also approved some revisions to the school calendar for the 2007-2008 school year. A professional development day originally scheduled for October 22nd was moved to October 15th. And a professional day originally scheduled for February 18th was moved to February 15th, meaning there WILL be school on President’s Day next year. That change was made to accomodate the State Wrestling Tournament. The school has come under fire from some saying it isn’t fair that classes are dismissed for state tournament basketball and not for wrestling. One board member, Ann Goerss, said she’s concerned the action could set a precedence for those wanting school dismissed for other state events.
