SL, Okoboji School Districts To Get Public Input On Possible Sharing Of Football

November 22, 2014

(Undated)– Talks of sharing football between the Okoboji and Spirit Lake school districts eight years ago didn’t go anywhere. But officials with the two districts say times have changed, and that maybe it’s time to explore the possibility again.

Okoboji Superintendent Bob Miller and Spirit Lake Superintendent Doug Latham says they’ve had some informal discussion since the season ended for both programs last week. They say they want to hear now what the patrons of both districts think about such a proposal. All interested persons in the Okoboji and Spirit Lake districts will be able to give input at a public meeting scheduled for 8:00 p.m. this coming Wednesday, November 7th at the Spirit Lake High School gym. Miller and Latham say feedback from that meeting will be relayed to both school boards. Miller says time is a factor, as districts need to relay their intent by December 1st to the Iowa High School Athletic Association. He says the next earliest time the two districts could enter talks would be two years due to the realignment of districts.

Miller and Latham say concerns over numbers and the ability to have a quality program is what led up to the talks. Miller said the main goal of a shared program would be to have a team that’s competitive on a consistent basis, and one that would give more kids more of an opportunity to play and to play on their level.
