(Spirit Lake)– Residents in the Center Lake area plagued by flooding during heavy rain events should soon see atleast a little relief.
The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday authorized an engineer to obtain bids on the construction of an overflow ditch on city property in that area. The project has an estimated cost of between 25-thousand and 30-thousand dollars. The council hopes to award a bid at their first meeting in October. Construction is planned yet this fall.
Longer-term options the council may consider in the future hinge on cooperation and funding assistance from the Iowa Department of Transportation. They include a new main outlet from Highway 71 and the construction of a detention pond at Johnny Jahn Park at an estimated cost of 152-thousand dollars.
A third possible option would include the construction of interceptor sewers in the Center Lake area at an estimated cost of 137,500-dollars.
Total estimated cost for all three options is 315-thousand dollars. But again, for now atleast, the council authorized getting bids on just the first option.
