(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday discussed but took no action on a proposed animal control ordinance.
The proposed ordinance still singles out Pit Bulls as being presumed dangerous, along with other types of dogs deemed dangerous by law enforcement. Animals would fall into that category once they’ve bitten someone or have shown aggressive behavior. Owners of such animals could appeal the designation. Owners of animals that are deemed dangerous would be required to abide by a number of conditions, including having a 100-thousand dollar liability insurance policy.
After an animal that’s been deemed dangerous bites a second time, it would then be euthanized.
Council members deferred action on the proposed ordinance, saying they want more time to review it.
