SL Council Hears Request From Commercial Waste Disposal Company

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A man who operates a commercial waste pick up business wants the city of Spirit Lake to consider allowing private firms to provide the service.

Presently city code give the city the exclusive right to provide waste pick up to commercial accounts.

But Mark Fallon who operates Junkies, a company that provides such a service, feels it isn’t fair for the city to have a monopoly. He feels his company could provide the service at less cost to businesses.

But City Administrator Mark Stevens says it’s his understanding the city’s commercial waste pickup helps subsidize the residential pickup. Without the commercial operation, Stevens says the city would likely have to increase its residential rates.

Fallon brought up the issue during the public comment portion of Tuesday’s city council meeting.

The council took no action on the matter.
