Semi Crashes Into East Lake Okoboji

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Authorities say the driver of a semi that wound up in East Lake Okoboji Saturday apparently suffered a medical condition.

The Iowa State Patrol says 53-year-old Randy Fish of Williams, Minnesota was driving a 2006 Freightliner semi westbound on Highways nine and 71 on the east edge of Spirit Lake when he apparently suffered a medical condition, causing him to lose control. The rig crossed the center line and went into the eastbound lane. It then crossed back over both lanes of traffic and went through a fence, coming to rest in East Lake Okoboji.

Fish was pronounced dead at the scene.

The State Patrol was assisted on the scene by the Spirit Lake Police Department, Spirit Lake Fire Department, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Iowa Department of Transportation Enforcement Division, Lakes Regional Healthcare ambulance, and three good samaritans who helpd Spirit Lake police officer Rodney Baker pull Fish out of the water.

The mishap took place shortly after 11:00 a.m. Saturday.

Authorities say the semi was hauling all-terrain-vehicle tires in an enclosed trailer.
