Runway Re-Surfacing To Result In Closure Of Spirit Lake Airport

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A long-awaited project at the Spirit Lake Airport is about to get underway.

Dr. John Kracht of the Spirit Lake Airport Authority tells KUOO news a re-surfacing of the runway will begin this coming week. As a result, Kracht says the Spirit Lake Airport will be closed to air traffic beginning this coming Wednesday. He says they’re hoping the airport will be reopened by June 26th. He says it will definitely be back open by the Fourth of July.

Kracht says this is the first time in atleast 15 to 20 years the runway has been re-surfaced.

Kracht says the two-inch overlay is intended to serve as a band-aid in the short term, in light of continued talk of a new airport sometime down the road.

Tri-State Paving is the general contractor on the $280,000 project.

Kracht adds they’re contacting those with planes stored in hangars at the Spirit Lake Airport advising them to get the planes out of the facility by this Wednesday if they’re going to be needed at all while the airport is closed. Otherwise, Kracht says they’ll be stranded there until the airport is re-opened.
