(Emmetsburg)– What will be a major addition to the Emmetsburg campus of Iowa Lakes Community College has the green light to proceed.
Campus Dean Tom Brotherton tells KUOO news the college’s board of trustees last month awarded bids on the project, which is being financed through a state grant. The 2006 legislature approved funding for 11 centers in the state, with the Emmetsburg location the only one in northwest Iowa.
The three-story facility will be constructed on the northwest corner of the existing campus in Emmetsburg. It will feature a three-story tower to help firefighters practice rappelling and lifesaving skills from a rooftop; a residential section with a varied pitch roof and the ability to practice attic ventilation during a fire; and a single-story portion housing the larger burn room. Interior walls of the facility will be movable, allowing firefighters to change room configurations.
Brotherton says construction is to begin this spring. It’s expected to take 180 days to complete the project, which includes the extension of a water main to the site.
Christensen Construction of Estherville was the low bidder on the building project; ABC Construction of Estherville was awarded the bid for the water main extension.
