A press conference was held yesterday July 30, to discuss the shooting that took place Sunday afternoon on Hill Avenue that resulted in the death of a Worthington man. On hand were Spirit Lake Police Chief Jeff Hanson and Special Agent Don Snnicher from the Department of Criminal Investigation. Snichter did release information that 55-year-old Kenneth George Nielson Jr. of Spirit Lake remains in custody in the Dickinson County jail, and a gun was recovered from his apartment at 1514 Hill Ave. Nielson was also one of many who called 911 after the shooting. 53-year-old Marlan Ray Lutterman of Worthington was killed, after being shot some 200-feet from Nielson’s residence. Nielson is charged with Reckless Use of a Firearm, a class “C” felony, and being held on 13,000-dollar bond. A preliminary hearing is set for August 9th, 2007. At this point, no further information is being officially released.The Spirit Lake Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is continuing to pursue this case, and KUOO will pass along any additional information as it becomes available.
