Presence Of Pseudorabies In Sw Mn. Raises Concern Among Hog Farmers

November 23, 2014

(Wilmont, Mn.)– The presence of pseudorabies in a southwest Minnesota hog herd is causing concern among area producers.

The disease was detected in a baby pig purchased by Jim and Joan Joens of rural Wilmont, Mn. A blood test positive for pseudorabies came back April 5th. Additional tests indicated eight more pigs were infected.

Officials are now testing hog herds within six miles of the infected farm. Tests on the first one-thousand pigs came back negative.

Pseudorabies does not affect humans or food safety. It commonly causes reproductive problems in hogs and can kill them.
