(Sibley)– 12 grants have been awarded to help six IOwa counties, including two in northwest Iowa, fund rennovations that will make polling places handicap accessible prior to the November 2nd General Election.
Slightly more than 22-thousand dollars has been awarded for the projects through the Secretary of State’s Office.
Osceola county was awarded 2,500-dollars to update a polling site at the May City Fire Station at a total cost of 3,385-dollars.
Lyon county was awarded 2,500-dollars to upgrade a polling site at Little Rock Town and Country. The project has a total cost of 8,146-dollars.
And three- thousand dollars was awarded to upgrade the Inwood Community Center at a total cost of four-thousand dollars.
Secretary of State Chet Culver says the first 12 grants represent the beginning of a statewide effort that will continue into 2006 when all polling places must by federal law, be ADA compliant.
Culver says 250-thousand dollars has been set aside to assist counties and communities that submit plans for refurbishing polling places to meet ADA standards. More than 200-thousand is still available.
