Orleans City Council Votes 3-2 To Reduce Speed Limit In Several Areas Of Town

April 12, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Orleans)– A lower speed limit will soon being going into effect in portions of Orleans, including 140th Street on the south side of Big Spirit Lake. Mayor Bill Maas says the City Council Monday evening voted three to two to grant final adoption of the change…

“The majority felt that it was a residential area and want to comply with the Code of Iowa. Not that the other people were doing things selfishly, it’s just that they had a different view on things.”

Maas says the reduction to 25 mph will NOT affect 240th Avenue, or county road M-49, on the west side of Big Spirit Lake…

“And that is shared by the county and Orleans, and we have more or less just stayed away from it and let the county go ahead and set the speed limits on that because they do most of the maintenance on it for us.”

Maas says new signage will be going up soon in those areas where the new limit will be going in effect.

On another matter, Maas says the Orleans City Council Monday evening approved the second reading of an ordinance pertaining to parking on 140th Street between the fish hatchery and pump house…

“There was kind of an agreement between the people there that would save Orleans some of the maintenance on mowing and stuff. They had volunteered and said they would be willing to take care of a lot of the mowing if they were allowed to park on that side of the street. I’m sure there will be some rough spots because there will be somebody that comes maybe to visit and doesn’t park far enough off the road or tries to park up on the trails property and then we’ll have to deal with that as it occurs.”

That proposed change will come back to the council for a final consideration at their next meeting.
