Orleans City Council Discusses Drainage

June 30, 2026

(Orleans)– A drainage issue in the area of the pump house at the intersection of 140th Street and Hill Avenue in Orleans was among the items on the agenda Monday evening for a special session of the Orleans City Council. Mayor Bill Maas says there was some discussion over changing the road grade in that area as part of the 140th Street project, but he says the council opted not to do that after hearing from an engineer…

“The more we talked about it, the street level is the same height. If we take out some of the excess gravel that’s accumulated over the years from sand being placed there for safety reasons at the intersection during the winter, and remove that excess material, that it should drain still very well, so.”

Maas says the retaining wall itself, consisting of what’s referred to as “jersey barriers”, will remain. Maas says they were put into place a number of years ago after several incidents in which vehicles collided with the pump house, which is owned by the city of Spirit Lake. Maas says to his knowledge, there have been no additional collisions in that area since that work was done.
