(Wahpeton)– Sailers from throughout the upper midwest are converging on the Iowa Great Lakes for the Inland Lakes Yachting Association’s annual championship regatta.
The class MC, E, and M16 boats race Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (Aug. 10th-12th) on West Lake Okoboji. Class A, C and I20 boats will race Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Aug. 14th-16th).
Phil Petersen is with the Okoboji Yacht Club, which is hosting the regatta. He tells KUOO news three classes will be sailing at the same time. Petersen says one fleet will sail on the south end of West Okoboji, near Gull Point; the second will sail in the middle of the lake; and the third will be in the northern part of the lake, probably north of Manhattan Point. Races will generally begin around 10:00 a.m., but Petersen says the time and locations could vary depending on wind conditions.
Petersen says West Lake Okoboji, Lake Mendota, Green Lake, Lake Geneva, Lake Minnetonka and the Oshkosh Yacht Club take turns hosting the regatta. He says it will be 2012 before the Interlake Regatta returns to Okoboji and five years or more before West Lake Okoboji hosts another Inland Championship Regatta.
