Okoboji Recognized For Adopting Low Impact Development In Zoning

November 22, 2014

(Okoboji)– The city of Okoboji is being recognized for being the first city in the state of Iowa to amend its zoning ordinances to include low impact development components.

City Administrator Dennis Daly says some larger cities in the state are now reviewing Okoboji’s ordinance and using it as a model as they look at revising theirs.

The city of Okoboji will be recognized this weekend when it will receive a Leadership Award from 1,000 Friends of Iowa.

The Silver Shores development in Lake Park will also be recognized in the category of Best New Commercial and New Residential Development.

Stephanie Weisenbach with 1000 Friends of Iowa says Okoboji and other award winners were chosen for their efforts toward smart growth and sustainability.

Low Impact Development practices involve usings a site’s existing landscape to filter, store, evaporate and detain storm water runoff…which could include using wetlands and native plants as filters.
