July 29, 2026

(Hartley)– A Reading, Minnesota man escaped injury Tuesday when a semi he was driving collided with a train at a crossing near Hartley.

Authorities say 58-year-old Thomas Martin was driving a 1998 Peterbilt southbound on Van Buren Avenue when he failed to yield at the crossing and collided with an eastbound Canadian Pacific train. The impact cut the semi trailer, loaded with corn, in half.

Two crew members on the train were also uninjured.

The semi sustained an estimated $60,000 in damage. Damage to the train was put at roughly $50,000. The incident took place a little before 3:00 pm.
