No Injuries Reported In Fairmont Train Derailment

October 28, 2021 Steve Schwaller

(Fairmont, Mn.)– There were no reports of injuries in a train derailment Wednesday in Fairmont.

Officials say at least four tanker cars carrying ethanol left the tracks as the train was going through a crossing on County Road 39 on the northwest side of Fairmont shortly after 2:00 pm. They say two of the cars leaked ethanol but no waterways were threatened. Hazmat crews and firefighters responded to the scene along with representatives of the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The derailment happened right in front of traffic that had stopped at the crossing. One motorist happened to catch the derailment on video.

The cause is under investigation, but the video shows one of the tanker cars kicking up what appears to be a slab of pavement as it travels through the crossing. Shortly after that several rail cars can be seen tipping over and rolling into a ditch on the opposite side of the crossing.
