Murder Suspects Make Initial Appearances In Dickinson Co. District Court

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)—Three men charged with murder in the first degree made initial appearances today (Tues.) in Dickinson County District Court.

30-year-old John Allen Swan and 29-year-old Scott Thomas Adair…both of Crossett, Arkansas, and 29-year-old Michael James Friedrichs of Forest City were arrested and charged Monday.

They’re accused of being involved in an altercation that seriously injured 25-year-old Matthew Thomas Begtrup of Sioux Falls, who later died of his injuries.

The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. Friday outside a Milford gentleman’s club.

A judge today (Tues.) set bail for each of the three men at 750-thousand dollars.

All three remain in the Dickinson county jail. They’re due back in court for an initial hearing April 18th.

Meanwhile, we’re learning additional details into last Friday’s incident.

According to court documents, the three men were initially arrested immediately following the altercation. All three were originally charged with willful injury. An additional charge of public intoxication was filed against Swan and Friedrichs. The willful injury charge was later upgraded to first degree murder against all three suspects after Begtrup died of his injuries this past weekend.
