Milford Turns Down County Offer On Culvert Project

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– Dickinson county will be on its own when it comes to a culvert project on Sixth Street just east of Milford.

The county is looking at either replacing a culvert in that area with a larger one or a conspan structure…similar to a small pre-cast bridge. The county said it would be willing to put in the latter type of structure if the city of Milford would be willing to share in the estimated 350-thousand dollar cost, as the city may eventually be looking at annexing that area.

At their meeting Monday evening, the Milford city council voted four-to-nothing to turn down the county’s offer.

Councilman Don Lamb was absent.

The action means the county will more than likely have to go with the option of installing the culvert at its own expense. Estimated cost of that option is 170-thousand dollars.

The Sixth Street project is part of an overall project the county is taking on to increase outflow capacity at Lower Gar to more quickly bring down levels on West Lake Okoboji during high water events.
