(Undated)– While Monday marks the kick-off of the summer season in the Iowa Great Lakes, it’s important we don’t forget the true meaning of Memorial Day.
Various Memorial Day programs will be held around the area to help out with that.
In Lake Park, the annual program begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Middle School/High School gym. Dr. Tim Destigter will be the keynote speaker. A dedication of the Avenue of Flags at Silver Lake Cemetery will follow.
The annual Memorial Day program in Milford will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Florence Park.
In Spirit Lake, the annual program begins at 9:55 a.m. on the east lawn of Iowa Lakes Community College. Guest speaker will be Colonel Craig Bergfrede. The program will be followed by a parade down Hill Avenue. In the event of rain the program will be held at the Sami Center.
In Estherville, memorial services will be held at the various cemeteries beginning at 8:20 a.m. at Eastside Cemetery. The program itself will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the National Guard Readiness Center in Estherville. Keynote speaker will be Lieutenant Colonel Heath Streck of the Iowa National Guard.
This year marks the 140th anniversary of Memorial Day in the U.S.
