(Spirit Lake)– House District six has a new State Representative.
Voters in Clay and Dickinson counties Tuesday elected Republican challenger Mike May over Democratic incumbent Greg Stevens. Unofficial totals showed May with 7,956 votes while Stevens’ had 7,004.
Dickinson county voters decided to retain their Sheriff. Greg Baloun was easily re-elected over challenger Tom Loebach. Baloun received 6,304 votes to Loebach’s 3,012.
In the race for two seats on the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary Sewer District Board of Trustees, Jerry Roskammer and Brian Craig were the winners. Roskammer received 3,095 votes and Craig had 2,995. A third candidate, Al Klein, received 2,513.
Jack Kibbie of Emmetsburg was re-elected in Senate District 4 with 17,459 votes. Republican challenger Harley Kohlhaas had 11,576 votes. Kibbie carried Emmet, Palo Alto, Kossuth and Pocahontas counties handily and narrowly defeated Kohlhaas in Webster county. Kohlhaas carried only the portion of the district in Humboldt county.
Incumbent Representative Marcie Frevert of Emmetsburg easily bested her Republican challenger, Karen Butler of Estherville. Frevert won Palo Alto and Emmet counties with Butler carrying the precincts in Kossuth county for House District 7. The final tally was Frevert 8,040 and Butler 6,143.
Incumbent Republican Royd Chamber was re-elected in House District 5. He received 6,886 votes to 5,163 for challenger Steven Gifford.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff was ousted in Tuesday’s election. Sheriff Russ Jergens, a Republican, lost in his re-election bid to Democratic challenger Dennis Goeders. Goeders received 2,741 votes while Jergens had 2,427.
Incumbent supervisor Leo Goeders was re-elected to his district three seat on the Palo Alto county board of supervisors, defeating challenger Mary Kunz Hilfiker 482 to 446.
The winners in a five-way race for supervisor in Emmet county were Randy Beaver, Roger Anderson, and Alan Madden. Beaver had 2,772 votes; Anderson 2,592; and Madden 2,381. Mike McKay got 2,295 votes and Wayne West had 1,850.
Incumbent Sheriff Larry LaMack fended off a challenge from Republican Brent Shatto in Emmet county. LaMack had 3,265 votes to Shatto’s 1,874.
And in Clay county, incumbent supervisors Del Brockshus and Sylvia Shoer were re-elected. Brockshus received 5,300 votes while Shoer had 4,551. Challenger Mike Mingus received 1,625 votes.
