Malfunctioning HVAC Unit Fills Restaurant With Smoke

November 22, 2014

(Okoboji)– A malfunction in a ventilation system made for a smoky start to the day (Wednesday) at McDonalds in Okoboji.

Arnolds Park/Okoboji Fire Chief Chris Youngbluth tells KUOO news firefighters were called to the restaurant around 5:30 a.m. when employees noticed smoke coming from a vent inside the restaurant.

Youngbluth says firefighters quickly determined there was actually no fire. Upon investigating he says they determined the smoke was coming from a malfunctioning heating and cooling unit, which was then shut down.

No injuries were reported. Employees evacuated the building, but returned a short time later.

Damage was contained to the heating and air conditioning unit.

Firefighters were on the scene about an hour.

The restaurant IS open for business.
