(Spirit Lake)– Most of the region is headed into the spring planting season with more than adequate subsoil moisture. That word from Paul Kassel, a Crops Specialist with the Iowa State University Extension Service.
Even though this winter was very dry, Kassel says the 11-12 inches of rain the region experienced back in September will more than make up for the winter deficit.
While we don’t have worry about a shortage of subsoil moisture, Kassel says there’s reason to be concerned over a surplus developing this spring. He’s worried that a wet weather pattern currently being experienced in the gulf states could migrate north.
Weather officials say a cooler, wetter than normal spring is typical with an El-Nino pattern we experienced this winter.
