(Arnolds Park)– Area fire chiefs say the public should be aware of a possible scam that’s making the rounds.
Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire Chief Chris Youngbluth says a telemarketing firm calling from the 515 area code has been contacting local residents saying they are raising money for Iowa firefighters.
Yungbluth says the campaign is NOT being conducted by the Iowa Firemen’s Association or any of the local departments.
He says one firefighter received such a call 15 times in three weeks. In questioning the telemarketers, the person was told the money would be distributed to departments in Iowa, but were unable to say how that would be done.
Telemarketers also said the money would send burn victims to camp. They claim the campaign was commissioned by “Iowa Firefighters”.
Yungbluth says the Iowa Firemen’s Association does NOT have a telemarketing program. He encourages people that wish to make donations to their fire departments to do so directly rather than through a telemarketer.
