Local Airports Awarded Grants

(Des Moines)– Some local airports have been awarded funding for various improvements.

The Iowa Transportation Commission Tuesday approved nearly four million dollars for the 2008 State Aviation Program.

The Vertical Infrastructure Programs will provide 2.3 million dollars for projects at all eight commercial service airports in the state, along with 12 general aviation airports. The programs provide funding for maintenance and development of airport facilities, including terminal buildings, maintenance facilities and hangars.

The Airport Improvement Program, funded with revenues from aircraft registration fees and aviation fuel taxes, will fund airfield and security projects totaling 1.1 million dollars at 18 general aviation airports.

Locally, airports in Spencer and Sibley were awarded General Aviation Infrastructure Grants. The Northwest Iowa Regional Airport in Spencer will get 39-thousand dollars and the Sibley aiport was awarded 50-thousand dollars for hangar projects.

The Rock Rapids and Spirit Lake airports were awarded funding through the Airfield and Security Projects funds. The Rock Rapids airport will get 128,350-dollars for a runway rehabilitation project and the Spirit Lake airport will get 13-thousand dollars to remove obstructions in the runway approach and side of the runway.
