(Undated)– The latest U.S. Drought Monitor issued Thursday, May 7th, shows a continued trend of improvement across Iowa…with one exception.
The report says only about two percent of Iowa is designated with some level of drought, with most of that in northwest Iowa. Western portions of Lyon, Sioux and Plymouth counties are classified as having moderate drought. The eastern portions of those counties, along with all of Osceola, Dickinson, Emmet, O’Brien, and Clay counties and northwestern portions of Buena Vista, Cherokee, Palo Alto and Kossuth counties, are classified as abnormally dry.
Similar conditions are reported in adjoining areas of southwest Minnesota.
The Seasonal Drought Outlook, valid through July 31st, indicates the current drought conditions in northwest Iowa are likely to persist or worsen, with below normal precipitation expected.
