(Arnolds Park)-The Iowa Great Lakes Rotary Car dropped through the ice on Tuesday. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
The Iowa Great Lakes Rotary Car fell into the icy waters of West Okoboji on Tuesday morning at about 9:30.
Club President Mary Skopec says the contest is a big fundraiser for the club. ‘Iowa Great Lakes Rotary supports a lot of worthy charities in the area and so the funding that we get from this event helps us support a lot of different activities. So, it’s essentially a raffle. Every minute is a time slot that people can purchase a ticket for $10, and whoever gets that time correct is the winner of $1,000. So, the rest of the money goes back to the club to support community events.”
She notes that the exact time that the car dropped won’t be known until the car is retrieved. “There’s a clock in the car and when it goes into the water it stops the clock. At this point it’s sitting in 5 or 6 feet of water. So, we need to get our partners, Boji Underwater Recovery Specialists out there. This is a training exercise for our emergency personnel and Boji Recovery. So, they’ll get out there and pull that car out, and they’ll look at the clock when it stopped. The car gets completely stripped of any engine or motor oil, so it’s not toxic to the lake at all, but we do need to be sure that it’s safe for our specialists to get out there and winch it out.”
