Iowa Department of Public Health’s “Care for Yourself” Program to provide opportunities for Free Mammograms in April

March 30, 2022 Becky Thoreson

(Spirit Lake)-A special offering through the Iowa Department of Public Health’s Care for Yourself Program will provide women who meeet certain guidelines an opportunity for a free mammogram.

Dickinson County Director of Population and Public Health Katy Burke says the program will be offered locally through Lakes Regional Healthcare on Thursday, April 14th and Monday, April 18th:

“So, both of those days will be from 3 to 6 p.m. and these will be for individuals that are uninsured, under insured or have potential barriers like a language barrier or a lack of transportation and they’re also a resident of Dickinson, Emmet or Osceola Counties. So, you will be between the ages of 40 and 64 or have signs of breast cancer under the age of 40, and then, have a monthly income of around $2,800 take home pay. So, looking at those women that would potentially not have options to get screened. So, we definitely encourage people to get out there and have early detection, which means early support. The great thing is, you may get screened and hopefully not have anything, and then it’s just a sense of relief.”

Burke says special arrangements can be made for those with a conflict on the scheduled dates:

“If those days don’t work out, we can certainly just sign them up for the Care for Yourself Program and help them navigate through the services on a day that does work for them. Beyond this program, Care for Yourself also supports pelvic exams and cervical cancer screenings, and so, that actually is open to women as young as 21.”
