(Estherville)– A proposal by the U-S Army Corps of Engineers to alter the flow of the Missouri River has been a concern for cities along it’s path a long time now. Even though the river is a long way from us, atleast one local power company says we should be concerned about it, too.
Terry Bruns, General Manager of Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative, tells KUOO news generating stations downstream from Sioux City would be forced to sharply curtail their output or maybe even shut down if the flows are reduced. Bruns is urging residents to contact lawmakers.
Bruns says the majority of power purchased by Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative and other utility companies comes from WAPA…or the Western Area Power Administration. Most of that power is generated by dams on the Missouri River.
