November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Icy roads caused problems over the weekend in Clay county.

A single-vehicle rollover shortly after 3:00 p.m. Saturday resulted in minor injuries to three people.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says 43-year-old Jose Acebedo of Storm Lake was northbound in the 5000 block of Highway 71 when he lost control. The vehicle left the road and went through the ditch and into a field where it rolled.

Three passengers, 43-year-old Rafaela Acebedo and two children sustained minor injuries but declined immediate treatment.

10-thousand dollars in damage was estimated to a 2004 Ford Excursion.

A Spencer man was injured Saturday night when he was thrown from a vehicle after the driver lost control on an icy road.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says 20-year-old Brady Vanderberg of Spencer was northbound on Highway 71 north of 300th Street when he started to fishtail. The vehicle went into the east ditch and rolled.

A passenger, 20-year-old Nickolas Birchard of Spencer, was ejected from the vehicle. He was taken by ambulance to the Spencer hospital with minor injuries. No injuries were reported to Vanderberg.

Four thousand dollars in damage was estimated to a 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe.

The mishap took place shortly before 11:30 p.m.

A two-vehicle collision in the 4200 block of Highway 71 Saturday resulted in charges against an Estherville man.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says vehicles driven by 25-year-old Michael Eral of Spencer and 21-year-old Augustin Tomas of Estherville were southbound in the 4200 block of Highway 71 when Tomas tried to pass Eral. Authorities say Tomas changed lanes too soon, catching the front of Eral’s vehicle. Both vehicles spun around, coming to rest in the ditch.

Tomas was charged with driving under suspension, no insurance and unsafe passing. He was booked into the Clay county jail.

1,500-dollars in damage was estimated to a 1996 Oldsmobile driven by Eral; damage to a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Tomas was estimated at 10-thousand dollars.

No injuries were reported.

The collision took place around 5:45 p.m.
