(Lakefield, Mn.)– The town of Lakefield, Minnesota is coping with a tragic weekend fire that claimed the lives of two children.
The Lakefield Fire Department was called to 305 South Griffin around 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Upon arriving, firefighters removed two nine-year-old children from the burning house. They were taken to the Jackson Medical Center where efforts to revive them were unsuccessful. They’re identified as Taylor Schmucker and Krystal Schwartzenberger.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says a preliminary investigation determined the fire was the result of two children playing with a lighter in a bedroom on the main floor of the house, which sustained extensive damage.
Firefighters were on the scene about an hour Saturday.
