High Water Uncovers Meth Lab Remains In Clay County

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Clay county authorities say remnants of a meth lab have been discovered in the area of 470th Street and 240th Avenue.

The Sheriff’s Office says it was notified Wednesday by a rural citizen about a suspicious looking metal container floating in a low-lying area. Authorities managed to retrieve it later in the day with assistance from the Clay County Road Department. Upon investigating authorities determined it was, indeed, related to a meth lab. The State Fire Marshall was called to the scene along with an officer from the Spencer Police Department and the Iowa Great Lakes Drug Task Force who rendered the container, which had anhydrous ammonia in it, safe.

Clay County Sheriff Randy Krukow says the container turned out to be a smaller aluminum beer keg. Krukow says it was exposed by high water. He’s warning residents to be on the lookout for similar items, and to report them to authorities.

Krukow says hunters and farmers returning to fields this fall should also be on the lookout. He says the items are highly explosive under pressure and could explode without warning.
