(Sibley)– Harrassment issues involving a social media app have one northwest Iowa school district considering a ban on cellular devices. In a letter to district patrons, Sibley-Ocheyedan Superintendent James Craig says the school board will consider the ban at a meeting April 11th.
In the letter, Craig cites an ongoing investigation into posts on a mobile app called Yik Yak which he says is threatening the well-being of students and staff. Craig says the school district conducted an initial investigation but is now calling for assistance from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office. He says anyone arrested could be subject to expulsion and legal proceedings. Craig says there are other possible implications for anyone caught and convicted, including losing the ability to get into a college or to get a job.
