H-LP Middle School/High School Principal Receives Special Recognition

April 06, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Lake Park)– An administrator for a local school is getting some special recognition. Greg Hiemstra, middle school/high school principal at Harris-Lake Park, is a nominee for the 2022 Iowa Secondary Principal of the Year award through the School Administrators of Iowa. Hiemstra tells KUOO news he’s very honored to receive the nomination…

“You know it’s really exciting because you’re nominated by fellow peers and administrators in the area, so to be recognized by local school districts, it’s a pretty cool honor and great feeling. I’m really excited to be a nominee and School Administrators of Iowa is a great organization as well. They give a lot of support to administrators across the state, so it’s really a great honor.”

Hiemstra has bee a secondary principal at H-LP since 2018. He says he’s proud of the accomplishments made over the past four years…

“One of the biggest accomplishments district wide has been our integration of technology into the classroom at that would be K-12, with the help of our Superintendent and Elementary Principal Andy Irwin. He’s made a big impact in that. And also our college and career readiness curriculum and a push that we’ve had at the middle school/high school level, just preparing our students for whatever they may do after H-LP, whether they’re going straight to the workforce, going to a four-year school, community college, we’re moving to really prepare them and set them up for success. Our teachers are putting a ton of work in to make that possible so that’s something we’re really proud of here.”

Hiemstra thanks those who made it possible for him to be nominated…

“It could not be done, without, you know, a great community school district and a great staff surrounding me. Because without them, you know, it would be impossible to move forward.”

Hiemstra will be recognized at the School of Administrators of Iowa’s annual conference which is upcoming.
