(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake elevator is no more.
The elevator hasn’t been used since it was sold several years ago to a local businessman.
It was burned Sunday in a practice burn involving 11 area fire departments, including Spirit Lake.
Spirit Lake Fire Chief David Kollasch says the burn went according to plans. He says 12 tanker trucks and five pumper trucks were utilized in the exercise, along with the Lakes Area Fire Boat which pumped water out of East Lake Okoboji near Isthmus Park that was transported to the site.
Kollasch says the exercise began at 8:06 a.m. and by 8:38 a.m. the head house, or top of the elevator, came down.
The burn had been scheduled for earlier in the month but had to be postponed due to poor weather conditions at that time.
