Festival of Giving Trees Winners Announced

January 03, 2022 Steve Schwaller

The pantry at Upper Des Moines Opportunity has received a boost from the Festival of Giving Trees. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

The winners from the recent Festival of Giving Trees at the Great Lakes Mall in Spirit Lake have been announced.

Organizer Kim Olander says the annual event helps fill the pantry at Upper Des Moines Opportunity:

“The Festival of Giving Trees is held every year in the Great Lakes Mall and we partner with local businesses who sponsor a tree, and they decorate it based on items that Upper Des Moines is in need of. So, for example, canned beans, cereal, toilet paper, and then we ask the public to come in and donate those items. We had two trees that got a ton of donations so, Mac ‘n Cheese Tree, which GrapeTree sponsored, had 756 boxes of mac ‘n cheese donated, and the Hope Haven was our other big donation tree, and they did Spaghetti O’s and Ravioli, and they had 561 donations. We also have a winner for the most creative, and the Girl Scouts had the most creative tree with canned beans, so they also were a winner this year. They receive a check for $200 to their choice of charity.”

The food bank at Upper Des Moines Opportunity continues to take donations of non-perishable food items.
