(Estherville)– The Estherville City Council Monday evening heard an update on the status of the city’s outdoor pool, which remains closed.
City officials say some 400,000 gallons of water simply disappeared as crews were attempting to fill the pool recently. It holds 255,000 gallons. City Administrator Penny Clayton says they identified leaks at 11 different locations, all caused by faults in pipes. Clayton says they believe the failures are due to the ground shifting. She told the council they’re hopeful repairs can get started very soon…
“We have contractors coming to take a look and give us quotes on what that work will cost to do. The plan would be to do trenchless repairs or slip line as much as possible instead of digging up deck and replacing that, and then we do believe we may have to pot hole in some locations to provide access to some of the pipes so that they could be lined. We’ve asked for bids hopefully by Wednesday so that we can make a decision and get somebody here to do the work. We’re also asking the contractors for a timeline, what time they would be available to do the work because obviously we are in the early and mid part of summer here and we want to get that pool opened as quickly as we can so hopefully we have some additional information as far as the timeline for repairs, later this week.”
Clayton adds those who purchased passes can get refunds…
“When we do actually know the pool is opening we will work on a new rate for the summer and make refunds to those who still have passes with us. There have been people who have called in and gotten a full refund already, and that’s perfectly fine as well and then if they decide to later this season once we get open to just buy a different pass. So they’re talking about some specials and trying to just do some fun stuff with the kids like we typically do.”
Clayton says she’s cautiously optimistic they’ll be able to get the pool open yet this season.
