Estherville City Council Adds New Notification Tool For Code Violators

October 19, 2021 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– The Estherville City Council Monday evening gave formal approval to an ordinance revision pertaining to how violators of certain code infractions are notified. In the past that has been done solely through certified mail. Greg Vanlangen, the city’s code enforcement officer, told the council he would like to add personal service as another notification tool. He says it would be handy especially for one certain type of violation…

“One for vehicle abatements. A lot of times law enforcement is on the site and they’ve got them there so they can print out a form and then give them personal service which in my mind is better than certified mail. We get about 70 percent of those back and they’re never opened.”

Vanlangen says personal service would also be used as an option for notification of other code violations. He added it would also save the city money on postage.

The council voted unanimously to approve the first reading. They then waived the second and third and voted to adopt the revision.
