Efforts are underway to endow a memorial scholarship at Iowa Lakes Community College, KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
Conservation Officer Steve Reighard was honored with a memorial scholarship at Iowa Lakes Community College last year.
Director of Foundations and Government Relations Dan Lutat says, the Iowa Lakes graduate was well-known in the Lakes Area. “Steve worked for the DNR for quite awhile on the enforcement side of things. So, being stationed over at Gull Point, he had the opportunity to really see a lot of people, whether it was out and about at parks doing patrols or whether he was out on the water, which is where a lot of people might remember him from. But, Steve’s passion really was environmental stewardship because he believed that resource needed to be preserved for people to enjoy and do so in a healthy way but also a respectful way.”
He adds that efforts are underway to endow the scholarship. “The family and friends really are driving this and so what we do as the administrator of that is, when we’ve got something to where we can clarify things for people to make sure that they know that the opportunity is out there, in conjunction with different activities that family, friends and different groups that were engaged with Steve want to do, those funds can be endowed. So, that’s ultimately the goal. That way that endowment basically sustains that scholarship fund in perpetuity, which is really nice.“
